Arte en Cantera is where all of our limestone is cut, formed, carved, and tooled. The factory is conveniently located in Dzitya on the outskirts of Merida. Just up the highway is the Port of Progresso where the finished product is delivered to Linea Peninsular for export to the United States or abroad.
Our partner, Enrique May Uicab, is a noted master stone craftsman of the region. His knowledge of the quarries and the best resource sites provide the perfect base material that is transformed into every architectural element called for by our clients. Once the stone is transported to our factory, it is hoisted from the truck with the overhead cranes to the staging area adjacent to the saws.
For each sawing berth, there is a railway cart system to facilitate the moving of the huge chunks of unfinished stone into the cutting area. The weight of one of these stones is tremendous at 150 lbs. per square foot. |

It is from this point that the stone is cut into the predetermined size so it may be refined to dimensional rectangular shapes for turning into columns or balusters, or medium dimensional works such as fireplaces or flatter works such as wainscoting, wall cladding or flooring.
Waste produced during production is used as fill to build up the ground to accomodate the elevated warehouse and work areas. The raised foundations serve a multi purpose and function as easier loading portals for the finished product. As our plant expands year to year the surplus rubble is wisely put to use. These are rough rectangular pieces of stone from which a baluster will be produced. Fabrication is a combination of machine turned and hand tooled. Shown are two classic styles that are commonly used in traditional architectural settings.
